As Election Day draws closer, the Yes on 1 campaign is collecting endorsements almost daily while the ‘No’ side has yet to announce any major support.
Question 1 asks voter to reject or affirm a recently passed law that eliminates Election Day voter registration.
The passage of that law and the subsequent people’s veto effort have been marked by partisan debate.
So far, three daily newspapers, including the Bangor Daily News, have urged voters to vote “Yes.” The Yes on 1 campaign also has claimed endorsements from the Maine Municipal Association, several individual cities and town and the Bowdoin Orient, the student newspaper of Bowdoin College.
The Bowdoin Orient endorsement was telling because it was supported by both college Democrats and college Republicans.
The real question is: Do endorsements even matter anymore?
