Vitelli sworn in as eighth woman in 126th Senate

Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic became Sen. Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic, when she was sworn in to the 126th Legislature by Gov. Paul LePage.

Vitelli becomes is eighth woman in the 25-member Maine Senate, all of whom are Democrats. She defeated Republican Paula Benoit of Phippsburg in a special election Tuesday, 4,631-4,169. Daniel Stromgren, a Green Independent from Topsham, received 357 votes. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap will certify the election during a special session of the Legislature Thursday.

The special election was called after then Sen. Majority Leader Seth Goodall, D-Richmond, who held the seat, was appointed as regional representative to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
