Some of the negative campaign ads that voters in the 2nd Congressional District have been treated to over the past few weeks came to life at an MPBN debate on Thursday night, particularly when candidates were asked to direct questions at their opponents. Emily Cain, the Democratic candidate from Orono, asked Republican Bruce Poliquin to explain […]

GOP poll shows continued dead heat in Cain-Poliquin race

A poll commissioned by Republican candidate Bruce Poliquin reveals a tight race in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. The survey, conducted by the GOP polling firm Public Opinion Strategies*, showed Poliquin trailing Democrat Emily Cain by four points, 37-33. That falls within the poll’s margin of error of 4.9 percent. Nearly one-quarter of those surveyed August 17-19 […]

‘Fed up’ Richardson rejects Poliquin call to quit congressional campaign

Blaine Richardson, a staunch conservative who left the Republican Party in order to run as an independent for the 2nd Congressional District seat, said Friday that he has rejected a request from Republican candidate Bruce Poliquin to drop out. Richardson said, and a Poliquin spokesman confirmed, that Poliquin made the request to Richardson in a phone […]

Raye, Poliquin attack each other on deadline day for campaign finance reports

Another campaign finance filing deadline for congressional candidates came and went on Friday, but perhaps more noteworthy than the totals (which are detailed below) were barbs traded between the two Republican candidates trying to win the primary for the open 2nd Congressional District seat. Raye, a former Maine Senate President from Perry, and Poliquin, a former State Treasurer […]

Money rushes into 2nd District House campaign; Collins raises $800k in Q3

Note: This blog post was updated several times Tuesday to reflect campaign finance reports as they were posted by the FEC or forwarded to the BDN by the candidates. This is the final version. Campaign finance reports filed with the federal government show contributions flooding into the race for the 2nd Congressional District race while incumbent […]

Willette drops out of CD2 congressional race

Maine House Minority Whip Alex Willette, R-Mapleton, has dropped out of the running for the 2nd District Congressional seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Willette issued his withdrawal statement less than two weeks after Michaud, a Democrat who was considered a nearly invincible incumbent in the 2nd District, officially announced his candidacy for governor: […]
